Dakshinamurty stotram English verse translation
Dakshinamurty
stotram
(Meditation
on one’s own self as one’s guide)
The idea in this poem is called Advaita Vedanta. This poem can be seen as the concise version of the book Viveka Choodamani. Both Vivekachoodamani and Dakshinamurty Stotram are known to have been authored by Sri Shankaracharya who is known for bringing Vedanta in general and Advaita Vedanta in particular into light. Self -nonself distinction and the theory of 'All is self and Self is all' are the subject matter of both Vivekachoodamani and Dakshinamoorty Stotram.
a mirror;
being there in own inside.
In self he sees
as if projected out
By Maya’s
work as dream in sleep is seen
When wakes
he turns to see it face to face
The in and
out not two but one his self
His Face
to South the smiling one to that
My
guiding form I bow within me now.
II
The detail not to see before it sprouts
But later space and time and all the thrill
unfold around by Maya’s wonderwork.
He is the one who spreads it all around
At will the way the Yogis great create
Or like the magic-doer who performs
His Face to South the smiling one to that
My guiding form I bow within me now.
III
That has the form of beingness along
with that which almost means ‘does not exist’.
Who teaches all approaching him for help,
With Veda’s sentence ‘That Thou Art’ direct
By Seeing Him directly self does not
Return to birth in sea of births and deaths.
His Face to South the smiling one to that
My guiding form I bow within me now
IV
As blaze of
beams of light of mighty lampInside a pot with several holes pervades
From eyes and all the other sensing parts
diffuses knowingness around the world.
The world is shining only after that
the glow of sense ‘I know this thing’ of Him.
His Face to South the smiling one to that
My guiding form I bow within me now
V
The 'I' to some the body some the lifeand some the senses some the fluid mind
some naught, naive and childish thoughtless dull.
Delluded make a lot of arguements.
He kills the great hallucination that
the Maya's playful act creates in them.
His Face to South the smiling one to that
My guiding form I bow within me now
VI
The dazzling Sun and lustrous moon appear
to have withdrawn the rays behind eclipse
The person (called the self) resembles that
He gets to total sleep when Maya shrouds
withdraws the senses dwells to just exist
When wakes recollects "was asleep so far"
His Face to South the smiling one to that
My guiding form I bow within me now
VII
In Childhood youth and age throughout the lifeIn waking dreaming sleeping deep throughout
In all the phases stages states persists
to keep to flash within as sense of 'I'
He brings to fore himself, that self his own
by using charming gesture of his hand
His Face to South the smiling one to that
My guiding form I bow within me now
VIII
This person called the self perceives the world
Divorced from self and made of different things
and their relations like the cause-effect,
the owner-owned, the teacher-student and
the parent-child; in dream or conscious state
the same mistake; misled by Maya's force.
His Face to South the smiling one to that
My guiding form I bow within me now
IX
The earth, the water-world, the fire, the windThe space, the sun, the moon, the person 'self'
immobile mobile all this, so appears
his only is the eight-fold set of forms
apart from this the all-pervading one
surpassing all, enquirers nothing found
His Face to South the smiling one to that
My guiding form I bow within me now
